There must be someone who can be my teacher among three companions. Pride hurts and modesty benefits. On the flag raising ceremony on October 22nd, students from Class 4 Grade 8 vividly illustrate with their careful design the meaning of modesty, an indispensable virtue of life.

First, they vividly portrayed the meaning of “There must be someone who can be my teacher among three companions” by their little drama. A small child dressed in Han costumes was building a castle with colorful sands in the middle of a street, where he blocked the way of Confucius’s horse cart. “why do you play in the middle of the street instead of the side of the street?” asked Confucius. The Child said, “Horses are supposed to avoid castles. Have you ever heard of Castles avoiding horses?”. Confucius was astonished by the child’s sharp observation and asked some more difficult questions to which the child answered with ease. The Confucius said, “There must be someone who can be my teacher among three companions”. We must always be modest in our academic endeavors.

Later on, the students took world famous scientists and writers, such as Isaac Newton, René Descartes, and Mo Yan, as examples to show the importance of modesty as an essential virtue of life. They never brag about themselves or look down upon others in their relentless pursuit of truth and greater achievements, because modesty is a constant drive for progress.

Great mountains are high because they never refuse any rocks; rives and seas are deep because they never refuse any creeks. Let’s move forward together, always bearing modesty in our minds.
